Monk Trip – Best Hiking Water Filters

If you are planning to go on a hiking or camping trip, one important consideration is where you are going to obtain water. If the trip is going to be fairly short and close to civilization, you may be able to get away with taking along some cold, bottled water. However, longer trips to remote locations demand something a little more specialized since you may only have access to natural water sources. Since this water is subject to contamination from biological and chemical materials, you should be prepared to purify the water in preparation for drinking now,Monk Trip.

In general, there are three methods for purifying water from a fresh water source such as a river or stream:
Boiling the water for a few minutes, burning off the contaminants.
Using an iodine tablet that will react with any impurities in the water, thus removing them.
Purifying the liquid through a hiking water filter mechanism.
Boiling is a less than ideal alternative because of how cumbersome and time consuming it is, not to mention the fact that it requires access to fire and a pot. The iodine tablet is actually a really great purifying method, and I would recommend always having a few of them as backup. The bad thing about using these tablets as your primary water purification method is that they are time consuming (generally about 30 minutes) and they do not remove particulate matter such as dirt or other solid materials.

Hiking water filters, on the other hand, are the height of innovation in this field and should be seriously considered. These products generally function via an inlet tube which is extended into the water source. A pumping mechanism is then operated on the other end, sucking the water in through the tube and into a filtration element. This element might be made of any number of materials, but carbon is the most common type.

My recommendation for the ideal water purification rig is a combination of iodine tablets and a hiking filter, where the tablets are a backup in case the filter fails in some way. Ideally, you should purchase a filter unit that will connect directly to a standard water bottle, threading onto the top so that the water can be stored directly after filtration. This will ensure that you can simply unscrew the bottle and drink from it, although you should wash the threads with a little purified water to make sure no contaminants remain on the bottle.
